The British Broadcasting Corporation has agreed to pay more than £400,000 to Lucie Kon, an award-winning producer who alleged she was forced out of the company after raising concerns about antisemitism in the workplace. Kon, who left the broadcaster in April, initiated unfair dismissal proceedings that resulted in the settlement. The BBC did not admit liability for the payout.

The dispute began in October 2023, shortly after the attacks in Israel. Kon said her professional standing changed after she messaged a colleague about the events and described Hamas as evil. The colleague responded by stating that Zionists were also evil. Kon later raised concerns about how Jewish staff were treated and argued that employees should be able to describe Hamas as committing acts of terror. Another colleague told her that if she labeled Hamas as terrorists, she was required to call Israel a terrorist state as well.

Kon helped establish an internal WhatsApp group for Jewish employees and wrote to then-Director General Tim Davie regarding the issues. She later proposed a film about the events of October 7. A manager initially discussed the project but said it needed to contextualize why Hamas acted as it did. When Kon explained the film was intended to be a straightforward account of that day, her manager’s manager told her she could no longer oversee the project. The manager cited her Jewish identity as the reason, stating she was partial. The replacement assigned to the project was the same colleague who had previously compared Hamas and Israel in that manner.

Kon submitted a formal grievance in response to these events. The grievance was not upheld, and the company told her that many colleagues did not recall making the specific comments. The BBC stated it was concerned about her mental health rather than her identity. An appeal against that decision was also unsuccessful. During the appeal process, the BBC moved the colleague in question to a different location and restricted Kon’s ability to travel, commission, or speak for the corporation. By December 2023, Kon was on stress-related sick leave. She returned to work, applied for a new position, and was rejected before being made redundant in April.

Kon is the first known individual to receive a settlement from the BBC following an allegation of antisemitic behavior. The compensation is partly funded by the license fee. The corporation refused to apologize or officially declare Kon a victim of antisemitism. A BBC spokesperson noted in a statement that the company’s processes did not uphold the allegations but acknowledged shortcomings and the personal impact on Kon. The statement described Kon as a valued member of staff with many years of dedicated service.

Kon told The Telegraph that the workplace environment for Jewish staff has not improved since her departure. She said other colleagues continue to face bullying and feel embarrassed to identify as Zionist or Jewish. Kon stated she became a problem because she made too much noise about her identity. She noted that one colleague told her that being a Zionist at the BBC was comparable to being accused of a severe personal offense. Kon said she brought her authentic self to work, as encouraged by the company, and lost her job as a result.
