Wyoming Freedom Caucus Backs Home Tax Cut
The group tells voters to approve a measure that exempts half of a home's value from property taxes.

The Wyoming Freedom Caucus wants voters to say yes to Proposition 1.
The measure would remove 50% of a primary residence's assessed value from property taxation. Each person could use the exemption on only one property. It would not apply to rental units or business properties. The cut covers the home structure itself, not the land.
Governor Mark Gordon opposes the proposal. He says the state would be devastated if it passes. Gordon argues that basic public safety, including police and fire protection, would be gutted. He also warns that school funding would suffer. Opponents note that 70% of property tax revenue goes to local schools. Since the Wyoming Supreme Court has ordered a specific funding level for schools, they say the state must find new money to fill the gap. Some critics suggest a state income tax could result from the tax loss.
Supporters disagree with the critics. They say there is plenty of money available to replace the lost revenue. They accuse opponents of using scare tactics and hysteria. The Freedom Caucus posted a video on Facebook to make its case to residents.
